In this exclusive conversation, we explore the company’s evolution and how their recent partnership with MAN engines is transforming their operational efficiency and environmental footprint.

The interview

Q: Good morning Mr. Barile, could you tell us more about the story of Capitan Morgan? How did you start, what do you do and what are your goals for the future?

A: Good morning to you. Capitan Morgan is an important and modern private shipping company, mainly active in Campania. It is engaged mainly in the excursion sector with a large number of on-board and land staff. The company, founded in 1993, manages a considerable number of vessels, combining managerial and entrepreneurial skills with knowledge and art of navigation. The goal is to offer a wide range of excursions and connections for the end customer, using innovative and technological motor vessels?

Q: Could you provide us with a summary of these last two seasons in terms of passenger numbers?

A: The last two seasons have been particularly satisfying, with notable passenger numbers and a consistent increase compared to previous years.

Q: How important are propulsion engines in your business? What do you expect from them?

A: Propulsion engines are an essential component of our ships. On the one hand, they are the key to ensuring that we can go about our business and reliably transport our customers. On the other hand, they play a key role in determining how successfully we can operate this business. Here we are once again focusing on reliability and, above all, on low fuel consumption.

Q: Last year you purchased a pair of MAN D2862LE483 engines for MN FRECCIA DEL GOLFO. What were the key factors in your choice to prefer MAN engines?

A: These engines are in line with our company’s approach, which is increasingly focused on sustainable solutions. This requires constant updating and therefore a modern, functional fleet. MAN has what it takes to achieve these goals.

Q: How did the first two seasons of operation for these engines go?

A: The first two operational seasons have been decidedly positive in every respect: excellent performance, low fuel consumption, and a significant improvement in on-board comfort for our passengers.

Q: You have decided to carry out a Field Test with the MN ISCHIAMAR I, equipping it with a pair of the new MAN D3872 engines with even higher displacement. How is the test going?

A: The results have certainly been satisfying and encouraging. These engines are exceeding our initial expectations. We are seeing a top speed of 26 knots, a very impressive cruising speed with reduced fuel consumption, and overall performance that surpasses our forecasts.

Q: Has this first season of the MN ISCHIAMAR I met your expectations, especially in terms of noise and fuel consumption?

A: Our expectations have been amply met. We are particularly impressed by how MAN has managed to reduce noise levels while maintaining high performance and efficiency. This adds significant value to our passengers’ comfort during excursions. Furthermore, the unit has already logged approximately 3,000 hours of operation, confirming its reliability and operational continuity.

Q: What is your relationship like with MAN, and how did they support you during the installation, commissioning, and after-service phases?

A: MAN in Italy is represented by Ranieri Tonissi who is a guarantee in our sector. Their presence has been constant at every stage of the project, from choosing the most suitable propulsion system to supporting installation and after-sales.

Q: How important is it to have a local MAN partner who can support you in any situation?

A: Nowadays, having a partner who is both present and competent is increasingly essential, a standard that Ranieri Tonissi guarantees through its extensive service network across the territory. In the maritime industry, where operational reliability is critical, proximity and the availability of high-quality local support are decisive factors.

Q: What are Capitan Morgan’s targets for the future and how important is the contribution of sustainable and technologically advanced engines in achieving your goals?

A: By actively and enthusiastically contributing to the common sustainability goals, Capitan Morgan aims for passengers to enjoy comfortable and reliable services, with numerous proposed routes, while admiring wonderful places along the journey.
